ICAM1(intercellular cell adhesion on molecule 1), also known as CD54, is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily (IGSF) of adhesion molecules, and is an important adhesive molecule that mediates adhesion reaction. ICAM1 is expressed at a low level in resting vascular endothelial cells (VEC), and its biological activity is exerted by binding to specific receptors on the surface of vascular endothelial cells.
As a transmembrane protein of white blood cells and endothelial cells, ICAM1 plays an important role in stabilizing cell interactions and promoting migration of white blood cells and endothelial cells.
The receptors of ICAM1are lfa-1 (lymphocyte function associated antigen-1, i.e., lymphocyte function related antigen-1) and mac-1, which belong to the family of integrins. Lfa-1 is the main receptor of ICAM-1, while mac-1 has a low affinity with ICAM1, and fibrinogen can also be one of the ligands of ICAM1.
